A Few Things that Matter More than GPA

January 30th, 2012

When you’re a high school student, your academic responsibilities should certainly fall at or near the very top of your list of priorities. There’s a simple reason for this. You’re young, and no matter how much you’ve done or experienced, your slate is still comparatively blank. Anyone who wants to review your potential before offering you a job or college admission will turn to your GPA, and he or she will use this number to make educated guesses about your work ethic and intelligence. But a GPA provides a very narrow picture of a complex human being. Wise evaluators know this, and you should too.

Throughout high school and college and into the working world, your potential as a candidate will be judged by many other factors beyond just your GPA. In fact, in most professions, the weight of your GPA will recede steadily with every year that passes after your graduation. So what other metrics will take its place? How will you be measured by those who need to make quick decisions about your potential using very limited criteria?

1.    Recognizable accomplishments

If you played Carnegie Hall as a teenager, no matter how this event came to pass, your track record will always show at least one highly recognizable accomplishment. Everyone knows this theater and everyone associates its name with success. When you showcase your accomplishments, try to monetize, quantify, or make them relatable. If you have a talent for winning people over, state this in a recognizable way, as in “generated 15 percent increase in new client business during 2011.”

2.    Respect for the enterprise

The best way to gain respect is to give respect. Dress professionally for interviews. Show interest in the things that others care about. If you find it difficult to fake interest in something in order to win over an evaluator, you’re on the wrong path. Stop and change course.

3.    Engagement and passion

Tune in. Demonstrate concern for your future and for the world in which you live. It’s hard to respect those who don’t seem to know or care what will become of them, and it’s hard to trust someone who seems glazed over or disinterested.

If you love volcanos, or the history of France, or miniature schnauzers, let your love shine. Personal passions and a willingness to pursue them show a sense of direction, curiosity, intelligence, and backbone. Everyone respects these things, and for good reason. Defend what you love. Your passion will elevate you and everyone around you.

4.    Vital signs

Keep moving. Do things. Even if you make mistakes, bark up wrong trees, chase the wrong job, love the wrong person, or heaven forbid, fail, every one of these adventures will add to the list of things you know and things you have to offer. And, like it or not, you will be judged by the length of this list. Be proud of your list. And learn how to explain it to others in ways they’ll understand.

Stand Out to Employers Who Overlook Unemployed Candidates

December 15th, 2011

News reports and rumors have generated significant buzz lately about employers who deliberately overlook out-of-work candidates. “The unemployed need not apply” is a shocking tagline that may not be appearing on job postings as often as some reports suggest. But this sentiment doesn’t fall outside the scope of possibility. Some employers may genuinely believe that unemployed candidates are somehow inferior to those who are currently working. And no matter how short-sighted, unethical or just plain silly this attitude may be, you may need to navigate around it at some point if you’re unemployed and looking for work. Here are a few points to bear in mind as you go forward.

First, if you encounter a message of this kind, whether subtle or blatant, stop and think before you act. If you’re unemployed and the company clearly isn’t interested in unemployed candidates, do you really want this job? The statement says more about the employer than it does about you. Clearly, this employer does not have a realistic perception of the character traits that suggest intelligence, talent, dedication or a strong work ethic. Ask yourself: What else does this company lack? What kind of dysfunctional culture are you likely to find here? More to the point, if you’re unemployed and this company devalues the unemployed on that basis alone, the company is already devaluing you, and they haven’t even met you. If you’re a strong and talented candidate (and you are), your skills will be better used and better appreciated elsewhere.

On the other hand, if this position seems to be a perfect match for your skills and you don’t want to be deterred just because of one silly, negative message, feel free to apply anyway, but be ready to demonstrate qualities that will help you overcome this obstacle. If you lost your previous position through no fault of your own, these employers will probably want to know this first and foremost. Their broad distrust of those who are out of work probably stems from the belief that unemployment is always the result of personal weakness, so before anything else, you’ll need to show that this does not hold true in your case. Before you even begin to list your qualifications, you’ll need to be clear: Your unemployment was not a result of your own actions.

Bear in mind that some employers become overconfident about their hiring prospects when the job market becomes oversupplied. This can easily tilt into a kind of perceived power imbalance, and some employers are convinced that the most dedicated employees are those who are most willing to grovel. Demonstrating that you want the job very badly will raise your appeal with these employers. But again, stop and think. If you are hired, you will be working for these people every day. Weigh the benefits carefully before you put a price on your dignity.  For additional guidance and help with your job search, contact the experts at Zenex Staffing.

Proofreading: Spelling and Grammar Errors in Your Resume and What They Can do to Your Candidacy

November 11th, 2011

When it comes to spelling and grammar errors in resumes and cover letters, many job seekers are led astray by these two thoughts:

  1. There are no typos in there. I already checked it. Then I rechecked it. It’s clean.
  2. Even if there’s a typo in there somewhere (and I know there isn’t), it won’t matter. The employer will know that I’m only human, and will forgive me for a small thing like that. Besides, they’re looking for a chef/manufacturing expert/paleontologist, not some kind of grammar nerd. I’m sure they’ll look past a small mistake and recognize that my background and experience are fantastic. My qualifications speak for themselves.

False. On both counts.

There are two people who are uniquely qualified to pass judgment on this issue. One is a professional copy editor, and the other is a hiring manager. Here’s what both of them have to say:

The copy editor:
Great copy editors are not always born that way. I’m not a naturally detail-oriented person, but I’ve learned many tricks during my years in the editorial field. Most important: no matter how many times you check something, it isn’t clean. It just isn’t. No matter how long or short the document, and no matter how many pairs of eyes have examined it, there’s a typo in there somewhere. Your job is to find it.

The hiring manager:
Some candidates think we don’t notice typos. We do. Some candidates think we’ll be forgiving. We won’t. This job can be stressful and dull at times, and one of our favorite forms of amusement is sifting through rejected resumes and laughing at them. We would never let the candidates know we do this, of course, but we do it all the same. Typos are our favorites. Sometimes a candidate will say he has a degree in “pubic health administration”, which is just too easy. But we also laugh at mistakes that might surprise you. A simple missing comma or improperly used semi-colon will have us turning to each other and saying: “This is a serious, professional position. What was this guy thinking?”
